Beacon Hill Park, Petting Zoo and Walkabout

Wed., May 5, 2010

To Beacon Hill Park by Bike

Named for the two beacons on Mount Beacon used by sailors to mark the Brotchie Ledge, Beacon Hill Park has been entrusted to the City of Victoria since 1882 after much unresovled dischord with the local Lekwungen people. It now boasts beautiful gardens, trees, wildlife and the The Beacon Hill Farm Society which was formed in 2004. The Koenders family, who have operated the farm since 1985, are pleased to continue bringing the joy of a farm experience to young and old. Their goal is to help children develop a respect for animals that will remain with them for life. We will cycle to the petting zoo and those who are interested can frolic with the farm animals. We will also be doing a nature/history walk around Beacon Hill Park before playing some games. **Camas kids will be travelling by bus.**

This will be a biking field trip. Children should be prepared with seasonal clothes, lunches, water and bike safety skills.

Fernwood Historical Walkabout

Wed., May 12, 2010

All Around Fernwood by Foot

Amongst the first areas in the Victoria area to be frequented by Europeans was what is now referred to as the neighborhood of Fernwood. It is believed that a Songhees village may have been located at Cadboro Bay and the area through which the trail from Cadboro Bay to Fort Victoria ran would become Fernwood. We will be walking from the school to a number of points of interest in Fernwood including where the original Fernwood Manor stood, Judge Begbie's house, Spring ridge, and more. Along the way we will discuss and explore the many ways Fernwood has becomne interwoven with the growth and development of Victoria as a city. We will also stop in on some of the local playgrounds to snack, rest, and play. **Not appropriate for Camas kids.**

This will be a walking field trip. Children should be prepared with seasonal clothes, lunches, water and knowledge of public behaviour skills.

Bowker Creek Greenway Exploration

Wed., May 19, 2010

From Browning Park to Oak Bay by Bike

Bowker Creek is named for John Sylvester Bowker, an American who settled in the area during the 1860s. Before agricultural and urban development, the watershed supported extensive Garry Oak meadows and woodlands. This unique ecosystem is now one of the most endangered in Canada. An estimated 45 percent of the Bowker Creek watershed is composed of impervious surfaces such as roads, parking areas and roofs. This field trip is a tour of the Bowker Creek Greenway from Browning Park to the Oak Bay waterfront. We will be placing some natural materials in the creek with hope of spotting them at the many stops downsteam which will include several parks and playgrounds. **Not appropriate for Camas kids.**

Students must come prepared with their lunches, water, seasonal clothes, bikes and bike safety skills. Don't forget your sunhat!
