Form for Session 6 Spring 2010
Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary by Bike - Wetlands Discovery
Wed., May 26, 2010
To Swan Lake by Bike
Swan Lake was formed 12,000 years ago when the last glacier receded. The lake was rescued from oblivion just a few decades ago. During most of its recent history it was a dumping ground for raw sewage, dairy farms and a winery. Cleanup began in the 1970's and today the lake is a rich habitat for a variety of wildlife. Students will gain an understanding of the value of wetlands by collecting and recording their observations of aquatic plants and animals. We will be treated to a program led by Swan Lake staff and volunteers. Topics include adaptations of some wetland vertabrates and their role in the food chain.
**Not appropriate for Camas kids.**
Students must come prepared with their lunches, WATER, seasonal clothes, bikes and bike safety skills.
Cecelia Ravine, Galloping Goose Trail
Wed., June 2, 2010
To Cecelia Ravine near the Galloping Goose by Bike
The Cecelia drainage basin straddles the border between the City of Victoria and the Municipality of Saanich. Since 1907 all but 200-300 meters of the creek has been re-routed into pipe systems which have drained storm and rain water from increasing areas of human-made impervious surfaces. In 1997 Burnside locals realized that their creek was among the most polluted in the CRD and so they took action in the form of the Cecelia Creek Restoration Project. Our field trip will include some time at the restored Cecilia ravine green space, the near-by Selkirk Trestle, and maybe some time at Bamfield Park on the south side of the trestle.
Activities on this trip will include stream, trail, tidal zone, park, and playground explorations. Weather permitting students will be allowed to wade in the ocean under adult supervision. Families with any concerns surrounding water safety should contact school staff.

Willows Beach, Art You Sure?
Wed., June 9, 2010
To Willow's Beach by Bike
We will be biking to beautiful Willow's Beach. Once we get there, we will walk along the beach, observe the wildlife, flora and fauna and hopefully catch a peak of life within some tidepools! After lunch, we will gather driftwood, seaweed and other beach material and create beach art and forts. Weather permitting students will be allowed to wade in the ocean under adult supervision. Families with any concerns surrounding water safety should contact school staff.
**Camas kids will be travelling by bus.**
