Light Week (July 5th to 9th)
During Light Week, we will be exploring the role of our favourite summer energy source, the sun. Students will investigate it's important role in the life cycles of most of Earth's creatures as well as how it helps create the world we see around us through colours and shadows. This week will be a fun way to discover the power of the sun and how it relates to our everyday lives.
Tuesday July 6th
Bike Skills at school
For the first Tuesday of our summer program, we will be spending the day working on our bike skills. Because biking field trips will compose a large part of the summer program, it is very important for children to test their biking abilities. This will be an opportunity to discuss biking rules and regulations, as well as arrange a biking order for the children.
Thursday July 8th
Bussing to Finnerty Gardens
Our first field trip will be bussing up to the Finnerty Gardens at Uvic, where students can observe the colours and shapes and collect specimens of a variety of different plants and flowers to use to make a field guide and as pigment for home-made paint.
Workshops & Activities
This week we will explore light through activities such as: harvesting pure water from salt water, learning about the formation of rainbows, colours, and shadows, shadow tracing, making paint from natural pigments, understanding why plants need light to grow, and other sunny experiments! A visit from a shadow puppet master may make this a deLIGHTful week.
