Taste & Smell (August 23rd to 27th)
Taste & Smell Week, the last of our sense themes, will allow students to contrast the smells of nature with the smells of the city as well as learn about the food industry and the importance of eating locally.
Tuesday August 24th
Biking to Mystic Vale
Our first field trip will take us to Mystic Vale, a forest rich in smelling opportunities. While there, students will harvest blackberries to be used for a delicious workshop later in the week.
Thursday August 26th
Biking to Bastion Square
Our Thursday field trip will bring us to the centre of the Island Chefs Collaborative Farm Market where students can find out about locally grown and cooked food, and maybe taste some while they are at it! The second part of this field trip will be a walk through the city to smell the difference between city and nature and acknowledge how the two locations may make us feel different.
Activities & Workshops
This week's activities will include identifying mystery smells and tastes, creating potpourri, making a smell map, painting how smells and tastes make us feel, learning about how smell and taste are connected, how the nose and tongue sense chemicals, how memories are related to smell, and how our food industry works (and some interesting discussions that go along with it). We may have a guest come and teach us how to turn berries into jam.
