Our Global Village Week (August 4th to 7th)
During Our Global Village Week students will be involved with discovering the larger world beyond their bioregion, and the relationship between local concerns and larger interests. It is important to realize that the local community is essentially dependent upon other communities, and we are involved in an integral social network spanning the globe. This is our global village.
Tuesday August 4th
Walking to the Sikh Temple
For our first field trip we will be walking to the Sikh temple, where students will be guided through a religious location to learn about spiritual values and other cultures. The Sikh temple is very close to our school and should be a fascinating field trip
Thursday August 6th
Biking to Thunderbird Park
On Thursday we will be biking down to Thunderbird Park located by the Royal British Museum. There we will be given a guided tour by a totem pole expert, who is also the grandchild of the main artist responsible for the totem poles there. This gives the students a chance to learn about totem art, symbolism and First Nations culture.
Community Investigation
A member of the community leads a workshop discussing their role or capacity
A volunteer for the Victoria International Development and Education Association will be visiting our school with pictures and a workshop about her experience volunteering at a Children in Crisis centre located in Zambia. Students of Oak and Orca have a relationship with the children at the centre, so hearing about the place itself from a volunteer's perspective is sure to be rewarding.
