Survival Week (July 20th to 24th)

Survival week will be concentrated on the nature of survival and habitat, and the students will discuss exactly what it is to survive. Is survival an extreme way of living? Or are our day-to-day routines another survival lifestyle? What composes our habitat, and how do we treat it? Survival seeks to answer these questions in an exciting, educational way.

Tuesday July 21st

Biking to Cattle Point

On Tuesday we will be biking to Cattle Point, which is a beautiful beachside location filled with driftwood. There students will be engaged in making beach forts out of the driftwood, makeshift habitats like those of the hermit crab, which populate the tidal pools.

Thursday July 23rd

Biking to Mystic Vale

For our Thursday field trip we will be biking to Mystic Vale by the University of Victoria campus, a beautiful rainforest which makes for an amazing walk and a fascinating stay. There we will make debris shelters out of the sticks and leaves covering the rainforest floor, another makeshift habitat and method of survival, which we will then disassemble when we leave.

Community Investigation

A member of the community leads a workshop discussing their role or capacity

Meyen Quigley, an employee at Streetlink Victoria, will be visiting our school to talk about her occupation and the kinds of people she works with. This will be a very interesting, stimulating conversation about methods of urban survival which is often overlooked.
